Print Server?

I'm looking for a recommendation on an inexpensive network print server. Printer is a Brother with both parallel and USB connections.

If you have one laying around that's no longer used (but works), PM me the model & price.

Re: Print Server?

I've been happy with our 3-port (one parallel, two USB) Hawking PS12U, which has apparently been replaced by the HPS12U (they didn't even change the model number in the product description). I haven't experienced any of the problems cited for that model.

Initial setup was difficult, but once I managed to assign an IP address it was a simple matter to set the printers up using LPR.

They also make single-port models, USB or parallel.

Re: Print Server?

Thx Randall.

Anyone familiar with Zonet ZSR0104UP or EDIMAX BR-6104P (or either company's products)?

Re: Print Server?

No one I've heard of (well, Zonet rings a bell, dimly) but that may not mean much. They probably use the same chips as well-known brands (it's an ADM5106 in the Edimax's case), and maybe you can infer something from similar products. Or not.

But with Newegg selling these at $28 for the Edimax (even though it's parallel only) and $41 for the Zonet, it's not exactly a big risk. Our "cheapie" Hawking goes for more than that, and it's just a print server.

Repeat after me: I need a neeeeeew router... Either one would work as a replacement for my dearly departed SMC Barricade. I really miss that built-in print server.

Re: Print Server?

Ended up going with a US Robotics Wireless MAXg Router with Print Server & 802.11g. Overkill? Yes. Need the WiFi? No. But for $20 (if the rebates come), and being able to replace the existing 4-port hub, it made sense.

You mean this one? Who's selling it for $30? I can't find it going for anything less than $60.

And here I was telling Mandi that routers with built-in print servers were a dying breed...

No, we were talking about routers with print servers. I don't have an excess of print servers, so the router part needs some convincing.

Aww.

But do report back when you get it.

Re: Print Server?

Got it yesterday and setup relatively quick. Seems to work pretty well, though note I have the wireless disabled and am basically using it as a switch/print-server. Have had a few odd print things happen, but am chalking them up to starting pains. If it's a miserable failure, I'll follow-up.
