Pack-Rat Confession -- AOL CDs

It's a sad, sad habit, and one I've been trying to break for years. I buy organizing books, I buy "how to de-clutter" books, I buy books on filing (and I actually do read them)--all to no avail. Then I hide the books, embarassed that someone (aka my husband) will say, "Hey! Where the heck are last year's taxes, if you're so darn organized?" He once saw a notice for a course on household filing at the local community college, and arranged an intervention. Sorry to say, nothing has worked.

Oh sure, friends and relatives think I've got everything under control.... If someone drops by for a visit, my house looks spiffy and clean---but it's there...under the surface...lurking. You just never know when y'might need some of that stuff...! I've become a very good "hider." BUT! I won't get into specifics, because it's NOT pretty....

Sigh...This is my current dilemma---
In a nice, tidy stack on my desk is a pile of 40 unwanted, unasked-for, unsolicited CDs. Ninety percent of them are from AOL, a few are from EarthLink, and a few others---but OH! Where they're from isn't the trouble...the problem is me.

I CAN'T THROW THEM OUT!!!
They're so darn pretty, those CDs--the way they catch the light, the way they reflect the rainbow in the sunshine, their perfect, smooth roundness... Arrrgggh!!! There must be SOMEthing that one can do with these????

Coasters? Mobiles? Mini-Frisbees? WHAT??? What do you do with perfectly good-looking CDs that you don't need????? (No! Not the "circular file" suggestion...it's too painful!!!)

All suggestions welcome. TIA....

Have an empty wall?  Start pinning them up...  Make a HUGE mirror...

1) Borrow a friend of mine's dog and get hours of entertainment reflecting light from the CD onto a wall and watching the dog relentlessly chasing the light and attacking the wall.

2) I do NOT recommend using them as frisbees.  They hurt...

3) Hang them from your rear-view mirror and blind either yourself or passing drivers.

4) Build a really lame, but cool looking, wind chime.

5) Give them away as x-mas gifts!

Too bad they don't send RW discs - at least they'd be as useful as the floppies they used to send... Remember those?

I know someone that made a tabletop out of CD's.

Some other suggestions:

Emergency reflection mirror - not much good if you're lost in the woods at night but they are good to store in the liferaft on your boat.

Tie several on a string and make a tail for a kite.

A bookmark for a BIG book.

Remember the movie "I Come In Peace" with Dolph Lungren? I think they were used as weapons in the movie. Maybe you could hold up a bank with one (if the tellers have seen the movie)

Put them in a pot. Add carrots, potatoes, onions, peppers, corn, parsley, beans, and a hambone. CD Soup

Lay them on the beach, then lay on top of them. This way you can tan both sides at the same time.

Melt them down and mold them into little shiny army men.

I could probably think of a few more but I can't give away all my million dollar ideas.

Top ten things to do with all those AOL CD's (ala David Letterman style):

10) Find some slightly unintelligent people and sell them "the internet" for $20 a CD (if you get busted, you do not know me )

9) To avoid the ramifications of #10, save money on xmas by giving away "the internet" to everyone as a gift, and use the money you save to pay your real ISP

8) CD's make good shims, like for a wobbly table leg

7) Hang it from your rear view mirror, to avoid actually having to make a sign that says "I have a CD player - break into me!"

6) In your basement, line the floor with them (shiny side up), then cover with clear acrylic for a unique look (we did that with Miller caps years ago)...

5) One word: Microwave!

4) As a funny joke, replace all of a friend's music CD's with them

3) Two words: Shiny Coasters!

2) Glue a tiny strip of cloth to them and sell them as CD cleaners

And the number one thing to do with all those AOL CD's:

Throw them away!
