Installing a perl script... on an NT Fileserver?

OK, so I'm nuts. But here's my question:

I work for a small company (read: management are technical morons) and would like to put up a company calendar for everyone to know what's going on. I can't use the Outlook Net Folders because not everyone has their own e-mail address. (In fact no one does.) And we don't have an internet server I can stick this on. (No they won't get a fq account to put an intranet on... what are you thinking? That would cost money! grr...)

Can I install Perl on our NT file server and run this script from there? Is it impossible without some version of IIS?

TIA!

I use this on NT machines to run some Perl scripts... works great, and it's FREE!     I think this will do what you need.

hi sara,

here's a page i ran across the other day that you should find helpful in making your decision: www.hyperseek.com/windows.html

it's a general discussion about what the problems are when installing Perl CGI programs on an NT system. the guys who wrote it suggest keeping your distance from IIS if you can help it...

maybe you could try to install the Windows version of Apache instead. it works well for Win98, i don't know about NT.

Apache works fine with NT; in fact I used to use an NT box for developing scripts.

But you may want to check out ServerWatch's review of the Sambar Server - I think it would fit your needs perfectly.  Here's an excerpt:

Quote:
Sambar Server: - Freeware Win32 Web server that excels as a development platform

...Originally developed for Sun Solaris but now available only for the Win32 platform (which includes the ability to run as a Windows NT Service)...Explicitly supported are CGI 1.1, WinCGI 1.3, ISAPI, server-side includes, and Dynamic HTML, while Perl 5 is included with the server.
So it seems to meet your three main requirements:

1) Perl compatible
2) Runs on NT
3) 100% Free

Hope this helps
