FTP or Win98 property?

As I am sure most of you can relate, I often have a large FTP session going in the background.  For example, at least once a month, I grab a fresh copy of my UBB Members (900+ files) folder, so I have a local copy when assisting the "I can't remember my password" minions (AKA, the "What does Case Sensitive Mean People" LOL .

About half the time, it runs quietly in the background.  The other half - it keeps "popping" into my ACTUAL active window.  More than once, I have inadvertently canceled the FTP action because of the intrusion . . . I'll be typing along in my "real" window and hit "enter" (for a return) just as the "Transferring . . . cancel?" window pops in.  In the Member folder example, it's particularly maddening, as the files are only 100 bytes or so apiece, and go zip-zip-zip, allowing me to type about 3 letters between each intrusion . . . I have to then go to task bar, make my intended window the active window again . . . ARRRGHH!!

But it doesn't happen everytime, or even every session.

I'm on Win98 using WS_FTP.

Thoughts??

You might try nabbing Windows Commander

I have never hand this type of problem that you relate. What I do, I select all the files I want to transfer, visually "drag" them from the remote site to the local site, and choose "download in the background". I can then go and work in another application with no problem.

I've found that by minimizing the ftp window (as opposed to just opening another window in front of it), the ftp prompts only flash by on the screen with each file -- just long enough to deactivate the current window, but apparently not long enough to accidentally be cancelled.

I should have included that that is what I also do, but it still "deactivates" my intended active window, forcing me to click in back to active via the taskbar.

I doubt there's any way around that.  If you are transferring numerous small files, well, you're pretty much screwed.    If it's a few big files, then the method works quite well.  A moderate number of medium sized files works pretty well, as long as you don't mind occasionally reactivating the window...

Hunt and peck -- one hand on the keyboard, one hand on the mouse...

I also use WS_FTP and noticed this.  One thing I have found... if I transfer a folder/directory it doesn't keep popping up, but if I go into a folder, highlight the files I want to transfer and begin transferring them it will pop up with each transfer.

I've never cared for Windows Commander - I use Windows Explorer for file management, and CuteFTP for FTP. The newer versions of Cute are no good in my opinion (ads in the software - ugh!) but 2.6 is very good and stable. I've never seen it prompt on every file - if you are overwriting files, it will ask, but you can click 'All' on the first one and it won't bother you again about it...

I guess I can't really speak about Windows Commander or WS_FTP any more, as I've been happy with Cute since '98 and haven't tried the others since (at the time, FTP support in WC was brand new and very buggy).

For WS_FTP Pro I trust you have gone to the Options tab (bottom) -> Session Tab -> and unchecked "Show Transfer Progress Dialog" (should be the second checkbox down unless they move it between versions).  With this unchecked, nothing should pop up at all.
