Permissions Question

I am running (or should I say, "attempting to set up...") Ultimate BBS at my site. I find UBB setup instructions to set some script permissions to 777 and instructions from FutureQuest "DO NOT set your scripts to 777 and/or mode 775; this will break them and is considered a security risk." (pretty emphatic).

How do I reconcile this?

What is the security risk? Is it a risk to only my site or am I putting others at risk by setting my script permissions at 777?

I'm having trouble getting my UBB to run.

We utilize suExec... it's a server wide rule.

Wherever it tells you to use 777 use 755 instead.. if it's in the cgi-bin.

Other then that just follow the directions
