A great program to help houseclean websites

About 2 weeks ago I set out to locate SW that will do find & replace in unopened files.

Why the need? Because I am moving my site's files around (housekeeping) & want to be sure that all my internal links are updated accordingly.

For instance, suppose I have moved a page named "it.html" from a folder named "old" to a folder named "new"

Thus, I sought a program that could find every file on my site that contained the string...

http://www.mysite.org/old/it.html

And replace it with...

http://www.mysite.org/new/it.html

AND do it without my having to open the files.

I found it! "Alert Wildcard Search & Replace" is designed SPECIFICALLY for webmasters who want to do exactly this sort of thing...

*It allows use of wildcards.
*It allows verification of every change (or not, as you prefer)
*It displays each file where it finds the search string, & allows you either to replace it or to edit it or bypass it, etc.
*It automatically backs-up every changed page (if you tell it to)
*It will restore old pages (if you mess up)
*It gives you a list of changed pages, & details of the changes made thereto. It also will upload all changed pages to the server (if you tell it to)
*It also does META tag housekeeping (which I don't need, but it's there)

Installed, the 30-day trial version uses 1.93 of HD. I plan to buy it ($25) when my 30 days are up.

Take a look. It might suit your needs...

Whoops! It didn't occur to me (until too late) that my hypothetical examples would turn into click spots. Sorry.

The URL at the bottom is valid. Check it out if the mood hits you.

Neat. I'll probably check the demo out, although paying $25 for a search and replace program seems like a bit of an overkill.

By the way, bellgamin, if you have enough cash, you might want to check out CodeWright. It's expensive, but it's a good (well-known) editor that has the search and replace feature properly implemented (and built-in), unlike UltraEdit. But as I said, it's *expensive*.

Not being a programmer I don't need no steenkin' programmer's editor.

All I do is edit.

Ergo, I guess what I need is an editor's program.
