Website Down? How do you know? NetWhistle!

Neat free service that will send you an email if your website goes down.  For 5 bucks/mo, they'll monitor much more frequently and even call a pager should your router not respond.

Tip-

If they email you when your site goes down, you probably want them to email an account that's NOT on your site's machine

Otherwise you may not know until after the storm is over

Another tip

Since there are more than one free services available.. use as many as you can... I've got a few of them running on various sites and it has happened a few times where one will report downtime while the other says all is fine... (ergo a line between here and the monitor was having problems).  Having more than one helps to decipher against false alarms and real downtime...  If it emails you.. head over to your site first and check it out... also try heading to domainwatch.com and running a trace route... of course you could also head over to the forums and see if it's been reported already too

I have some more things you can use to help you monitor listed at http://hosthelp.com/techtools.php
