Need info re: compatibility

Have a quick ? if anyone can answer....got a new puter last weekend.  Bought a cordless pen so I can sketch without using my mouse (ow!)  After hours trying to install it and on the phone with tech support, they tell me they don't have a driver for the pen compatible with a Pentium III.  Does anyone know of a pen that is?

Uh, the last time I checked the processor in your computer had nothing to do with compatability...  It's usually the OS at fault here.  What are you running?  Win98?  What brand pen is this?

Hi,

Thanks for responding.  It didn't make much sense to me either but after wrestling this thing both on my own and with the pen manufacturer's tech support, that's the answer they came up with.

I'm running Win98.  Just got the new puter last Sunday.  The pen is a HyperPen 5000, manufacturer AipTek.

Aha, I just remembered something - some drivers can be sensitive to the _SPEED_ of the processor.  For instance, the original Umax driver for my scanner (defunct due to SCSI problems, don't ask) threw a fit when I upgraded from a Pentium 166 to a Celeron 300->450...  Turned out that it began screwing up if the CPU was 300Mhz or faster.  This may be the case!

Hm, I thought they quit relying solely on the CPU / bus clock years ago - most software (and drivers) use clock ticks (1/18th of a second, or 55 ms) as a time reference... so the speed of the CPU clock shouldn't matter. Heck, find any old DOS game (like the origional Tetris I have on a 5.25" floppy) and try to run it on anything faster than an 8088 - the pieces fall so friggin fast even on the slowest speed

The actual pen itself probably isn't the problem, just the software driving it. They need to update their drivers, and possibly state incompatibilities on the box/advertisement - just as good business sense...

Seems to me the manufacturer owes you one of two things:

1) A delivery date for the updated drivers.

2) A quick and painless refund, due to their poor packaging.
