make a zip of old UBB directory?

i ahve no idea how to do this, but I'd like to make a zip of my old UBB and then download it and delete it off the servers. Perhaps 2 zips, one for cgi-bin stuff and one for non cgi-bin stuff.

I just want to archive the files...just in case. (switched over to VB tonight)

I'd like to get them off the server as we are OUT of space. once we get them off, we should be fine on space.

Can someone tell me exactly how to do this? I know so little about telnet... but can follow directions.

Jeff, I did what you said and this is the response from telnet:

[curvem@FQ-Dexter:/big/dom/xcurvemag/cgi-bin ]$ tar -czpf ubb.tar.gz
tar: Cowardly refusing to create an empty archive
Try `tar --help' for more information.

I cd'd into the cgi-bin and then tried to zip the ubb directory. Is that right?

You have to tell tar which files to archive; put an asterisk behind the command to archive all files; tar -czpf ubb.tar.gz *

I am in the cgi-bin (and the ubb folder is inside of that)

and I typed what you said and this is the reply. (I think the use of cowardly is funny!)

[curvem@FQ-Dexter:/big/dom/xcurvemag/cgi-bin ]$ tar -czpf ubb.tar.gz*
tar: Cowardly refusing to create an empty archive

Put a space between ubb.tar.gz and the asterisk...
