FTP Password Changes

I'll start off by saying this might be a bug in Adobe GoLive, but the more I experiment with the problem, the more it seems to be caused by the server.

Here's the question...

Is it possible for the server to do something to my FTP program (in this case Adobe GoLive) that would make the password that I've saved in the preference window change when I log off the server?

In other words, let's say my password is 'gate.' First, I open GoLive and set the password to 'gate' in the preference window and select select "Remember Password" so I don't have to enter it over and over again.

When I log on to the server the first time, it works. However, when I log off and quit the program, it changes the password to something else (I can't read it because it hides the name with dots, but it's a different number of characters).

Any ideas anyone?

Hi, Bill!  I know that some programs mask the number of characters by putting some other number of "*" there...and from a security standpoint that's a good idea.

I'll assume you've tried logging back in, regardless of the number of "*" shown and it failed.

To see what password is in there, I use a free lil' jobbydo from www.rekenwonder.com called Password Revealer.  Very handy thing to keep in your toolbelt! (doesn't work under Win2k tho...)

Or if you are on a LAN, you can use a network packet snooper to see what password is really sent to the server. And even if it is encrypted, as on a secure line, you can compare the one that worked to that that failed.

what version of GoLive? i haven't had a problem with this in either v4.0-v5.0.

have you tried logging in with the "dotted out" password? what would be the error commentary?

rather than working with external password programs, i just retype in the password as i know it. may be simple, but it works.
