Serving .gif images from the cgi-bin directory?

I've just installed a new discussion board script that I'm testing. The installation was a bit odd to me. I put all the files in the cgi-bin directory, including .html template files and image files. (Other scripts I've installed in the past, some of the files have gone in cgi-bin and others have gone under the www directory.)

Anyhow, the board is mostly working. (Thanks to Justin and the CNC troubleshooting for helping me figure out that I uploaded my scripts in BINARY! Duh!.)

The board is here:
http://www.thinkspot.net/cgi-bin/boa...boardpower.cgi

But the .gif images won't load,  although I've put them in the following directory:
/big/dom/xthinkspot/cgi-bin/boardpower/images/

I don't think I'm up to the task of editing all the many files that come with this script to change the paths so it looks for images elsewhere. Is there a way to serve .gif files from cgi-bin? There must be, and I'm sure it has to do with that ol' .htaccess file.

Won't work as the 'cgi-bin' is a magic directory that interprets all files called as executable scripts...  This is done to prevent the following:
http://www.acme.com/cgi-bin/password.txt

Instead of displaying that file, it will try to execute it which will cause a 500 error since there is no executable code within -- only plain text...

You will need to move all GIF files outside of the 'cgi-bin' directory in order for them to be served properly...  Most all CGI scripts have this as a user customizable provision via path settings...  If it does not, then shame on the programmer for making such a bad assumption...

Thanks for the reply, Terra. I will go to their support board and ask about it. If I need to, I will point him to this thread here, as a reference.

Thanks,
sheila

Sheila -

Would like to hear your opinion of Boardpower.  I have that set up as well and it doesn't look bad, but the integrated chat leaves something to be desired!

Also had a weird problem with trying to access it from the panel, but figured out that it was some sort of config error on their part.

Probably most important is speed and ease of use.

OK, after visiting their support board for only a couple of minutes, and searching in the "Installation" forum on "graphic" I find that, in fact, the script is configurable as to where you put the graphics. It's just that the default install is in a subdirectory of where you put the rest of the script files.

Matter of fact, this script comes with a very nice web-interface for configuring the board.

I just don't want to give this script a bad name because I was up at a ridiculous hour installing it, and apparently not thinking clearly.

OK, I got the graphics working now.
