running a .pl file?

I am kind of new to working with cgi. I just found a program that I am trying to install but having problems. The is program: http://www.smokey.net/scripts/easyad/

The read me file says to access the directory from the web and run the install.pl by typing: perl install.pl .

I am not sure what this means can anyone help explain what I am to do here? I tried to upload the install.pl in ascii and set the chmod to 755 then going to www.domain.com/cgi-bin/install.pl but all I got was a 500 error.

Thanks for your help,
   Troy

I would guess that's a typo or jumbled directions.  perl install.pl would be what you type at the command line (telnet) to run it; through the web would require typing a URL for the script.  It sounds like you did the latter and got the error, so there may be server/account configuration variables you need to set in install.pl.
