phpbb or smf bulletin board
I'm putting up a forum on my website and I see that someone (Bob) recommended smf over phpbb. Do you still recommend it?
will it work with an ds-irm i'm setting up for www.sterlington-la.com which will be at my.sterlington-la.com?

Re: phpbb or smf bulletin board
I had a phpbb installation here at FQ. But there were so many security problems that I deactivated the forum. I installed the Lite (free of charge) version of the WOLTLAB burning board. It's a stable and easy-to-handle forum software. The last security bulletin from http://nvd.nist.gov/ for the forum is from 2008. .

Re: phpbb or smf bulletin board
A cursory automated audit of SMF came out pretty good a few months back. If the choice is between the two, I would strongly recommend SMF over phpBB for security. Like Manfred, I've seen too many security issues / hacked sites with phpBB to recommend it. -Matt

Yes, BUT, security doesn't seem to be as good as SMF. -Matt

Re: phpbb or smf bulletin board
I've used SMF for along time, and played with the SMF 2.0 RC2, and it seems to be pretty stable.
But there seems to be trouble brewing between groups over development and ownership of code:

Re: phpbb or smf bulletin board
I've played with Expression Engine a little bit (EE 2.0 is built on the CodeIgniter Framework), but I think it's more of an enterprise solution, and although reports are that it's pretty secure, I haven't seen it to be a speed demon.
The other issue is that EE is really a CMS/Blogging platform, and the forum add-on is a separate purchase. It doesn't have all the gizmos vBulletin or Invision have, but it's stable, and there is some development going on for it.

Re: phpbb or smf bulletin board
Honestly I recommend MyBB www.MyBBoard.net as it is more powerful than PHP BB and SMF and is as secure, if not more secure than SMF.

MyBB ... is as secure, if not more secure than SMF
|
What leads you to make this statement? Are you referring to administration capabilities (e.g. the ability to ban users) or to the security of the source code itself? I know that the MyBB site does make some claims regarding security auditing, but I am wondering whether you have performed comparative audits yourself?
I've now installed and configured both SMF and MyBB. MyBB has a feel that is closer to vBulletin than SMF does out-of-the-box, but it is much easier to write code that hooks into the functionality of SMF. Additionally, the SMF code is very straightforward and module installation is dead simple.
