Cat Warmer

Yup, you read the subject right. I bet a few of you have cats! We just recently moved (we bought a place in SF!) and our new place is not nearly as sunny as our old place. Our cat (Spike) used to follow the sun around in the old place. Now he just seems depressed. I'm not too keen on the heating pad kind of cat warmers... but our guy needs some heat. Any suggestions? A lamp? What kind of bulb? A heating pad?

As a side note: a 20 foot branch of a a huge ficus tree fell down in front of our house today. No damage (except to the houseplant!) but the weather has been a bit gusty.

Any suggestions welcome! Spike needs some heat! he's getting up there in years....

Re: Cat Warmer

Congrats on the new place.

Some of the beds and things on here look kinda nice?

And this "Self-Warming Thermal Cat Cushion" seems to be really popular (with some great reviews)?

Re: Cat Warmer

Yeah! I had found the cozy winters site, but not that self warming thermal thingy. I hate Petsmart, but will go over and check it out. Thanks.

Good to hear you got through the nasty weather OK. Sounds downright ... East Coast-ish.

Don't cats have a demonstrated liking for warm TV sets? (Our cat never had the opportunity because the TV was hidden inside a cabinet.) Or maybe that was a holdover from the vacuum tube days...

Isn't there an insurance commercial, something about the damage is covered ONLY if it is a Ficus Tree?

Re: Cat Warmer

I've lived here for 10 years, and am still amazed that ficus trees get that big!

Speaking of cats & cold, the first NH Cat Primary is behind held on Tuesday to decide on a new mascot for the top of Mount Washington, home of the world's worst weather. It even made the front page of the Union Leader newspaper yesterday.

Re: Cat Warmer

I have the Self-Warming Thermal Cat Cushion that Melissa referred to and its alright. My 2 Persian cats do lay on it so I guess they like it alright I think other pet stores have it too, not just Petsmart, since I got mine at Pet Supplies Plus or PetWorld near Milwaukee here.

Re: Cat Warmer

If you do have windows that get SOME sun, maybe you could make them more accessible to the cat with these? I've thought about those, but we move soooooo often, our, uh, cat sunbathing needs shift frequently too LOL.

Mazel Tov on the new place, that's fantastic! I hope you're feeling settled after unpacking, etc. How did Rose manage with the change? (Pretty good, I'm guessing, if it's the cat whose maladjustment warrants posting LOL!!)

A cat mascot sounds about right for a place like that.

Cats have long been an integral part of the Observatory, and constant companions to the summit crew. The current feline resident, Nin, has full run of the Sherman Adams State Park building in the winter, but tends to stay in the Observatory proper in the summer. In the summer he regularly braves the outdoors to bask in the fleeting sun. During most of the year, however, he prefers the warmth of the crew's quarters and the weather room.
"You think I'm going out there in this? You're out of your mind." At that's a normal cat response to normal bad weather. I don't think a dog would have the proper sense of self-preservation.

On the other hand, one of my catsitting clients is so freaked out by visiting dogs that he just stays outside until they leave, no matter how bad it is out there. (Boss #2's kids are mostly dog people -- go figure.) No one knows how he survives these episodes, which can last for days.
