Go to
http://webmaster.info.aol.com/ and click on "Graphic Info". Once there, clicking on "AOL Compression" will tell you that you're basically out of luck... unless, of course, you do something at least a little weaselesque: make all your gifs animated gifs, and it won't compress them.
If your jpegs over 1K are getting compressed, you're SOL, except maybe if you can generate "Progressive 3-pass" jpegs, which apparently the AOL software can't currently deal with (see their FAQ page for the reference).
Most annoyingly, AOL's page says "users can change this setting, but most choose to use compression" Er... no, most have no idea that such a thing exists, there's no real "choice" going on for most of it. Of course, "No real choice" is appropriate for election day...
