I don't know of any sources for something like that. But I will take this opportunity to point out that yesterday was, in fact, Jeff's birthday -- which he neglected to mention to anybody.

I would look around on US Gov't sites. They're not copyrighted, and I don't think there's a problem building on that work. At a glance, weather.gov would require some mods because a few districts overlap states.

Thanks Randall
And thanks for the leads. I found a "free" outline map so I think I'll use that as the base and create my own imagemap on top of that - probably just as easy as trying to remove the extra stuff.
--somehow I feel younger- last time I traced a US map was in grade school

A couple of years ago I was looking for one of those for the Chipmunk Emergence Survey, and found this useful (though annoying nav) site with (restricted) free map clipart:
banished by the chickenhawk...
"Chickenhawk n. A person enthusiastic about war, provided someone else fights it; particularly when that enthusiasm is undimmed by personal experience with war; most emphatically when that lack of experience came in spite of ample opportunity in that person's youth."
- from the Chickenhawk Database United States Military enlistment standards
