DS-ER question

Hello:

I have a question about DS-ER Externally Redirected Subdomain.

Is this for only HTTP, or does it work for other protocols?

IE:

mms://media.myfuturequestdomain.com points to mms://65.11.22.123

Also, can you point to only IP addresses, or can you point to a Domain name as well??

Thanks!

Hello John,

A DS-ER can only be pointed to an IP address and is only for http. Additional entries are not created for DS-ERs.

To create the functionality you seem to indicate would require you to manage your own DNS completely.

Hmmmmm:

Maybe I can do this through DynDNS.org's Custom DNS solution? I'll have to talk with them.

Thanks Bob!

and is only for http.
I'm just curious - what's the difference in how the DNS entry is setup and the reason for the distinction to only http?

I think Bob may have been thinking about DS-IRO or DS-IRM when he was initially responding... Those two are in fact designed for HTTP only...

To clarify, DS-ER is a DNS entry that points a subdomain to whatever IP address you would like... We also do not setup MX records for DS-ER entries by default, however they can be ordered from us on special request...

DS-ER is basically protocol neutral, and the following would work perfectly fine...
mms://media.myfuturequestdomain.com points to mms://65.11.22.123

Hopefully this clears up any confusion about the DS-ER offering...
