Is it worth switching registrar..?

I have one of our domain names up for renewal soon. They are all hosted by FutureQuest.

I've always registered and maintained the three I own through NetworkSolutions/VeriSign. They want $25 per year for a three-year renewal of a single domain.

We're not talking about serious moola here, but if there is any substantial savings to be had, I'll listen.

What are the hassles associated with changing registrars, and is it worth the savings of a few dollars..?

If the domain is properly registered in your name and you don't need to change the contact email address, it should be a very smooth process to switch registrars there. No drawback there. Savings is a significant advantage with just about any of the alternatives, and no one's service is worse than Network Solutions'.

Auuggghhhh!!!!!

Never mind the price -- NS can screw you up all by themselves without the assistance of a domain transfer. Like Dan says, as long as your contact info is correct it's safer to move than stay.

I actually DID manage an email contact change at NS - I had to fax in ID and such to accompany the request - and am finally moving my last domain away from there. I like joker.com, they're $10-12/year depending on the Euro rate (they are located in Germany.) I know lots of folks here like dotster.com, and I have a couple clients that use godaddy.com. I believe their prices are comprable to joker.

Get AWAY from NetworkSolutions!! Did that a couple of years ago, one of the best decisions I made. Now I can own 3 domains for the same price... well, almost anyway. I'm with Dotster via the FQ interface. If I can send FQ a couple of extra dollars by using them as an affiliate then I will. And by paying for 5 years, I can get them at $13/year... not bad, a third of what NetSol used to charge me. Even if you have names in a Dotster account, you can transfer it to the FQ account easily.

I believe GoDaddy is around $9 now, if you're looking for the cheapest in town.

$5.00/yr plus tax. I just registered one name a few weeks ago and will be doing more soon. But I am only registering names to tie them up, I will admit to paying way too much to Register.com just to avoid any potential problems in transferring. Had I read this thread first though I may have transferred.

Andilinks.com is paid through 2006 now...

Price Increase

ev1 just increased the price to over 6.49$. I registered a few while they were selling at 5. The bought domains from OpenSRS and I love Tucows/OpenSRS though it's not the cheapest. I always go for QUALITY.
