stats "spike" - what is this?
What would cause a spike like the HITS on the 29th?
Stats are mostly a mystery to me and I don't even know where to begin looking.

Check your referrers and see if you you've got a bunch of virus hits.
Edit: Did I say referers? Try the Not Found report, sheesh. You'll see a bunch of searches for things you know aren't on your site.

Well I'm lost, as per usual. I'd like to post the url to my stats so if anyone feels like having a look for me, they can. Is there any reason not to post the url to my stats here? They're not password protected, btw.

Some of us don't like the stats open because nosy people can rifle through files that are only in development . . . it sorta breaches the "Look what we've been working on!" element if anyone can just peek and see what you've been doing all along. However, if you don't have anything on there you would mind *anyone* peeking at, it's probably fine. FQ wouldn't leave them unprotected by default if it were a blantant security risk. It's more a privacy thing, but that's up to each indvidual site owner.

I couldn't find anything that jumped out on the http-analyze 2.2 stats but they are not broken down by day and you have a lot of other traffic there for the entire month. If you downloaded the log from JUST the 29th it probably would stand out. Find it at 0:/big/dom/xboppin/logs_web/access 20030529.gz
You can download:
http://www.mach5.com/products/analyzer/index.php
For a 30 day trial which will give a very good analysis...
Or if you send me that day's log I'll do it and send you the report.

So as not to leave the thread hanging loose, the spike was caused by a single user requesting a single file 28,274 times causing that many error 403's and using 8.8 MB of bandwidth in the process.

Any clue what the useragent was? Is this a GetRight type scenario, or one of those people who set Internet Explorer to check the website for updates every 5 seconds or something?

Binky may have a better clue, but I humorously suggested that it was someone who passed out on their keyboard holding down the "enter" key.
This occured after what appeared to be a legitimate download by the same user, so it could have been his or her computer doing the equivalent of "passing out."

<edit> To save others the trouble, I looked this up... http://www.getright.com/ It's a download manager, yes maybe a GetRight error. </edit>

ROFL!!!
Sorry, I should've clarified what I meant by GetRight, I'm so used to problems with GetRight on my own site that I just assumed that the whole world knew what I meant - yes, including those people who have never used a computer, of course of course
