Unique Member accounts without using SQL?

Okay, starting from the beginning:

My website is a heuristic site of writing, reviews, photography, et cetera. I'm currently running Movable Type 2.63, and am quite happy with the design.

What I'd like to do is implement a registration system, so people can create member accounts on the site, so they can "own" their comments a bit more (my one major bone to pick with MT is their comment system), and potentially even post in selected areas. This is all to encourage more interaction and communication on the site.

The issue is that I can't cost-justify upgrading to Silver to get MySQL quite yet (few viewers, tuition costs, wedding costs, and moving costs are the major factors). Is there a way to implement this using a different method? I'm not all THAT comfortable with Perl and CGI, but I'll probably be able to muddle through if I'm pointed in the right direction.

Any help you folks can offer would be much appreciated! Thanks a bunch in advance
