stupid tables

I can't tell if some brain cells died or what, but I can't figure out how to elegantly (or even otherwise) make this table be 100% tall. The table defines the page colors. Can you help me figure this out?

I want the orange/red bar on the left to extend to the bottom of the entire page., just like it does on the top.

That's never easy to do. It usually requires some combination (never seems quite the same depending on overall table layout) of adding height="100%" tags to various <table> and <td> tags. Eventually, I usually stumble on the right combination...

Of course, the quick and dirty way to do it is to add lots of <br>'s at the bottom of the red column to manually extend it further down. Problem there is making it long enough to satisfy super high resolution monitor settings while not making an ugly, unnecessarily long scroll bar for others.

Maybe CSS would solve this problem. I have no idea how to do the css positioning thing. Would this be a difficult site to have css do the positioning? Maybe I'll try to learn....

It could probably be done (I honestly don't know), but I wouldn't try it, regardless. I'm still far from convinced the time has come that CSS can be relied on for page layout. I've seen some pretty nasty results in the past from CSS positioning inconsistencies across browsers.

I took a look at the page and took a stab at it using your graphics & such. I have my variation (gone). I'll delete it after you have a chance to look.

I arranged it into a single row with a left, center, and right columns. I have absolutely no output elements after the </table>. I set the body background color to your color value. Since the background color is already set, the center column could use a transparent pixel of 1x1 with an appropriate width on the IMG tag to size the column, or because it is already wider than a space, use the width tag on the column and a &nbsp; for the content.

Not to steal Greg's thunder, but it looks only so-so in Netscape 4.7. IE6 and NS7 look fine, at least.

Yeah, I don't have NS 4 any longer. Getting something to work on all of them is a major pain. It was intended only as a sample, not a complete solution. Heaven knows I'm no artist.

You know, I can live with the Netscape crap for now. But the interesting thing is that it required a 100% on height and width of the main table. So, I had to nest a table inside the main table. I think I can control the netscape issue (widening of left table as browser gets wider) later.

Gotta run to the bank (I just sold my car!).
