List of standard fonts?

Does anyone know of a resource listing the standard fonts that come with your basic Windows PC? I've added so many, I can never remember what is special, and what's standard (ie, what I can expect a garden variety web visitor to have installed.)

Additionally, if anyone knows of a good reference for finding approximate matches between standard PC fonts and Mac fonts, I'd be extremely grateful.

TIA

I've seen the list, but can't remember where. I'm sure somebody here will know. In the meantime, a good freeware font manager, X-Fonter, highlights the original Windows system fonts if you ask it to do so in the program's preferences.

hi mandi,

for the mac ... some of the really basic fonts that correspond to windows font software are:

mac ----- pc
helvetica --- arial
courier --- courier new
times -- times new roman

in the crazy world of design, i usually end up writing pages for "serif" or "non-serif" fonts. So i would code:

<font face="Times New Roman,Georgia,Times,Palatino,serif">
or
<font face="Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Tahoma,sans-serif">

this way, if people have the specific fonts on their computers they'll see 'em, if not, it will go to the standard sarif or non-sarif font selected in their browser.

there are other generic font choices such as, "cursive", "fantasy" or "monospace". a bit of info on this is at: http://www.webfonts.com/tag/1998/08_07_98.shtml

if you want to check out some offerings from microsoft for both mac and windows you can check out:
http://www.microsoft.com/truetype/fontpack/win.htm

don't forget these are in addition to the regular, included ol' system fonts. so people would have to download them to their computer to see the same results.

.... ah, just the tip of the iceberg ... hope this helps,

julie
