"Essential Perl5 for Web Professionals"

Has anyone read this book? If so, what did you think?

I'd like to add this to my reading list, but my current book stack is full--"Java2" from wrox (technically very good but boringly written), "Network Programming in Perl" (excellent book by the author of CGI), Oracle 8 (21 day series), and "Programming Perl" (new 3rd edition). So, I'm pretty selective right now.

I haven't read any of the Essential ___ for Web Professionals series, so if you haven't read this book but others in the series, what did you think?

actually i'm leaning towards this one as my next purchase:

Perl Developer's Guide by Peschko and DeWolfe ($60, ISBN 0072126302)

seems fairly comprehensive and looks like one of the better Perl books i've come across on my visits to Borders. so hard to choose books when they cost $50 per pop, so i tend to be quite picky. and like most other developers, i'm also pressed for time to actually read them...

Disclaimer: I am an O'Reilly bigot. Love 'em. Some of them are so good I have two copies: one at home and one at work.

Context: My company pays for any technical book you want. No limit (wheeee!). The policy is "please be responsible." So there is a reasonable amount of exploration and information sharing. You know that you have found a winner when it disappears (permanently) from your bookshelf for the fifth or sixth time, and you have to put a note on your expense report explaining that your are not reselling them, just replacing a great book (again).

Anyway, we haven't had much luck with the 'Essential' series, or with the Sams 'Learn Everything in 42 minutes' books.

I'd recommend the O'Reilly Perl CD Bookshelf Version 2.0 (dumped Learning Perl (which I was never impressed with and doesn't meet the standard of other O'Reilly texts) and includes Perl in a Nutshell, Programming Perl, Advanced Perl, Perl Cookbook, and (new) Perl for System Administration). Comes with a hard copy of Nutshell, and on the CD a search engine and both consolidated and separate indices.

After that, add Perl for Web Site Management by Callendar. Good read, good reference, more integrated than most.

What do you think of Stein's 'Network Programming in Perl'? I have been thinking about getting it, but I seem to recall that it is a little long in the tooth. Of course that doesn't affect the value of his 'How to Set Up and Maintain a Web Site' or his CGI.pm book (easier to use than the man pages for me).

Stein's 'Network Programming in Perl'?
I'm currently reading this. I originally mis-quoted the title, it's actually "Network Programming with Perl." I'm about 1/3 of the way through the book, but I would rate it as excellent--the book has one of the best description of how pipes work that I have seen yet.

Rich --

Network Programming with Perl just arrived. Going to have a heck of a time getting work done (fighting with an Oracle connection at the moment) with a *whole new book* sitting there looking at me.

Network Programming with Perl is fantastic... now if I could just put some of the examples to use.
