Wordpress: Multiple blogs

After much tribulation, I got my first Wordpress blog up and running (yay!)

Now I'm ready for the big leagues (I thought)...

Setting up my second one, in what I thought was exactly the same way as the first one, I get this error:

Error establishing a database connection

What I did:
Understanding I get 10 mySQL databases with my hosting account, I set up a second database.

The first one, xflightsofwit-richpotterblog works fine. In the CNC mySQL panel, its name is in hyperlink blue.

the second one, xflightsofwit-bertthenerdwp is not hyperlinky; In the CNC mySQL panel, its name is just plain ascii text.

As per the multiple database instructions, I changed the table prefix line in the new blog's wp-config.php to the non-default "$table_prefix = 'bert_';"
The problem-free blog still sits with default "$table_prefix = 'wp_';"

I've double, triple, quadruple...dodecatuple checked and the password and user name in both wp-config.php files are the same.

Do I somehow have to create a new user? Do I have to create a "network?" I have searched on the wordpress site for "Error establishing a database connection" and am finding all sorts of non-solutions to my problem. Wondering if I've stumbled on something Futurequest-specific.

Thank you in advance. I'm always pleased with how quickly (and non-judgmentally) the FQ staff/community helps out!

Much aggravation,
Much hair thrown on the floor,
One post in aota + one dog walk later,
I change an i to an I (in my defense: really similar in Monaco font)
and my neighbors hear a resounding, "DURRRRR!"
Thank you Melissa, for your (apparent) non-judgment!

(in other words: Solved. Apparently I needed to triskaidecaduple-check.)

Re: Wordpress: Multiple blogs

I spoke too soon!
Fixing the one thing, I finally got to the "install" page.
I filled out the basic form. Named the blog; entered username/password, hit continue...

SERVER ERROR
The website encountered an error while retrieving http://flightsofwit.com/bertthenerdwp/. It may be down for maintenance or configured incorrectly.
Here are some suggestions:
Reload this webpage later.
HTTP Error 500 (Internal Server Error): An unexpected condition was encountered while the server was attempting to fulfill the request.

I went to FTP and gutted the folder, then re-uploaded everything. Now I can't even get back to the install page.

No; I had gutted the directory on ftp; not the file. Then I re-uploaded.

Then I sat for 15 minutes, goofing off, waiting for help here.

I have no idea what happened, but I got to Dashboard, but all the links gave me a 500 error. Now I can't even get to Dashboard.

Re: Wordpress: Multiple blogs

Try uploading your wp-config.php file again. Something appears to have gone wrong with it and it can't be empty (it needs the database settings, etc) in order to connect.

Re: Wordpress: Multiple blogs

OK; it appears to be working.
I reuploaded like you just said, and it worked.
Then I tried to poke about and test it; got the 500 error.
Then I reuploaded it again, and now it seems to be working.
I'm leery, but fingers crossed.

I will consider this an "idiopathic illness," treated, but not cured. Thanks for your hand-holding.
