Max files per directory?

Here's a 2005 recommendation , but I think this was before the Genesis Class servers.

Is 2500 still a good rule of thumb?

That is still a good rule of thumb. The filesystem/server may be able to handle more, but fewer files makes file management easier. For example, if you need to delete a file using an FTP client, it may not be able to handle a huge list.

Just out of curiosity, which file system do the Genesis Class servers use? (Unless it's a trade secret.)

The Genesis class servers are using the Linux ext4 file system on top of the lvm2 logical volume manager on top of mdadm software RAID1.

Also, within ext4 we have the atime feature disabled for performance reasons.
