USB flash storage: awesome prices now at Dell!

Dell is offering unbelievably low prices on Lexar Media JumpDrive Secure USB keychains. These are the only ones on the market that support password protection on both Windows and Mac OS X, and they're pretty decent little devices. Nice shape and size, very sturdy, though the cap can come off a little too easily.

Go to http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/p...tegory_id=5850 for more info. The best deal is the 512 MB model: free shipping, total cost is $79 after the $30 Lexar mail-in rebate. [Note: I had to use IE to order from Dell's site; Mozilla didn't work. ]

Disclaimer: I am neither an employee nor shareholder of either company, I'm just passing this info on so others can benefit.

Very cool Songdog! Dell has some awesome sales sometimes, every week they always have something different going on (discounts, etc) When I was buying my server from them they had all kinds of offers with it, upgrade in memory for the price of 256 (to 512) and such. I like Dell out of all the brands I think, never had a problem with them.

..now to see if they'll let me trade my old server in for a newer model

How handy are those flash memory things anyway? Has anyone had problems using them with a linux based machine? I have thought about getting one before, for those files I must have available for transport.

I've got a couple around... pretty handy.

The only downside, at least for me, is that they tend to be rather slow.

I've been watching the prices fall on flash drives, but so far I can't figure out what I'd use one for. I've got CD burners everywhere, a USB adapter for hard drives and I can transfer files between home and office over the internet. I'm tempted to buy one anyway just because they're so cool -- the new Dells can even boot from USB -- but I'd rather buy stuff for my new camera right now.

Speaking of which, I bought a CompactFlash card from Dell a couple of weeks ago. It was on sale, with free shipping and a $15 rebate.

Probably their only real asset is that they're so [physically] small and transportable.

For paranoids like myself, it's a comforting feeling to have every site I operate backed up on a little 512K dingus rattling around in my pocket.

Oy, one more thing to hang on my keychain.

I'm sure I'd lose the stupid thing if it wasn't firmly attached to something. Maybe when they cost $2 apiece I'll stop worrying about that.

I use the Sandisk Cruzer because it just plugs in any SD card to a USB port with no driver (except for old systems) and is no larger than the other thumb-drives. I have a laptop with SD built in, Olympus digital camera that uses SD card, Rio MP3 player with SD card expansion, and purchasing Palm with SD card soon...

This compatibility makes life a little more less complicated.

Too bad CompactFlash cards are a little too big for thumb drives, because I'd love that kind of compatibility with my camera.

At this point I'd settle for a USB card reader -- if I could find one that only does CF cards. Don't like the way these "6 in 1" readers clutter up My Computer with half a dozen new drive letters...

I'm with Noah. I bought this about 8 months ago and LOVE it! And my Olympus C-720 also uses SD cards, so I can use the Cruzer if I don't have the camera and cable nearby to download or show pix to friends.

Buy.com has one for $16 with free shipping. I have been using it for over a year and it works like a charm.
