Transferring from NetSol to Register.com

Has anyone here who used to be with NetworkSolutions transfer their domain registrar to Register.com? How smooth was the process? I've heard horror stories of NetworkSolutions deliberately making it difficult for domain owners to leave.

Also, how is Register.com as a registrar in general? Are their DNS as reliable as NetworkSolutions, etc? How about security?

I transferred one domain to register.com from NetSol - I wouldn't say it was exactly smooth, but there were no major problems, it just took awhile longer than register.com said it would.  There were no issues with NetSol - once register.com completed their process, I received the transfer notice from NetSol like clockwork.  Be prepared to fill out a bunch of paperwork and send a copy of your photo ID (to register.com).

As far as the horror stories are concerned, I think they're somewhat overblown.  The problems are usually attributed to not performing the procedures properly or completing the forms improperly.  I'll admit that NetSol doesn't make it easy, but if you do your homework, you shouldn't have any problems.

I'm not familiar with all the registrars out there so I'm not sure how register.com would compare, so I can't comment on the rest.

I just recently submitted 2 domains to be transferred from Network Solutions -- one went through in less than 2 weeks, the other one I'm still waiting for.  But I expect it to go as smooth as the first .

-You do NOT have to have Register.com as your registrar to be with FutureQuest!

-I definately understand transferring away from Netsol, but I'd reccommend looking at all the registrars before picking Register.com

-I cannot say this one from experience: Other people have said it goes by smoothly. This is the general consensus and I agree because most posts regarding Netsol made to forums and msg boards would be there bad experience... usually ppl don't post too often about how Netsol smoothly helped them.

Well, I transferred from Network Solutions, but I didn't transfer TO Register.com. I transferred both domains to Dotster (currently $15/yr).  Why would you choose to transfer to Register?  I did have to fax over a signed transfer agreement, authorization, and photo ID copy, but that wasn't a big deal.  Overall, I think the process was very easy, and I can manage my domain information whenever I choose.

I emailed Dotster about the second domain transfer, and they emailed me back within 24 hrs saying that they expected it to be completed within one week...they were waiting for a response from Network Solutions .

Well, compared to NSI, it's obvious (better support, online admin tools etc). Compared to other registrars (ie: 000domains, etc), I guess I'm still stuck in the age old thinking that bigger and older = more reliable. What happens if, say, 000domains goes bankrupt, for example?
