well i've been using fixit utilities for quite a while now and i'm pleased.. the verion i have is 4.0 and some of the features like the crash protector don't work in xp, but the AV part hasn't let me down yet. it has even alerted me to viruses that came in via websites (disguised as graphics or cookies i would imagine).

even when i was using a 466 celeron with 64 meg of ram i didn't have any problem with it killing all my resources

Sniff, Sniff, It looks like spam, it sounds like spam, and smells like spam. I think it might be spam...

I once used McAfee but got fed up with it four years ago with the interface. I then used Grisoft, a freebie. A worm got by it so I scouted the web for info,.and came across a site that tested anti-virus software. Grisoft, the package I used up to then, was way down the list at about 62%. I chose to buy the only anti-virus package that tested out to 100% in all categories that it, and all the other packages were tested. I also wanted software that had "live udate," so I picked the only package in this category (caught 100% of the viruses in the test and provides live update), Norton.

Sometimes it updates twice a day. I'm very satisfied with its performance.

first i guess i should say my hello's... i just stumbled in here.

now that is out of the way... just wanted to comment on what you had said tibbits. although common sense will take you a long way, it will not keep you safe... ESPECIALLY if you are using Microshot. the only way to accomplish what you are saying... is to NEVER get online (if you have a dial-up)... NEVER surf around... and NEVER recieve emails. I don't know about you... but that somewhat defeats the entire purpose, doesn't it?

on the few machines that I have left at home running win2k and my windows files server, i am using symantec corporate 8. through the smc, you can set your variables, and allow the server to handle all requests, or set it to allow each workstation to function independently. it also acts as a continual feed for updates, updating all of the machines it manages in one swoop, rather than one at a time, and will update as they become available... or within a specified time range. (mine is set to check once per hour)

that is by far the best setup you could get, but comes with a hefty price tag. if you are concerned about system resources, mcaffee will function the best under low available amounts.
