Core PHP Programming - Book Released

Woohoo!
Mine came yesterday too!  I couldn't believe it - normally, books are left at our door.  So I kept checking and checking... I was so disappointed.  Then last night, my husband checked the mailbox (unusually late) - it was there all that time!  I went to bed with it and stayed up much too late
I love it. I agree with everything Deb said.
I just posted under the UBB thread that I wish we could all get together & develop our own forum pg with it...

I'm through about 6 chapters, I found quite a few spelling errors, but that's the only complaint. I didn't believe that it's about 550 pages, with a CD-ROM, for about $35.

As an reference, Chapter 6 starts on page 67, and gets into Classes. If you don't know any programming, this book may not be for you, but it touches on the basics. I'm just glad it doesn't hold your hand through every chapter like a "Dummies" book does.

So THAT's how they've solved that overflow problem. I knew that the Vatican and the British gov't had refused them storage space, but I never knew they'd be so ingenious! Do they have a "volume" discount?

I agree overall on the PHP3 book...

Only bad thing about it, is PHP is a moving target - rapidly developing...

As a no-holds barred quick reference book for syntatical sugar, it does it's job quite nicely...

Reminiscent of the Perl5 quick reference guide, which is my most heavily used book...

The only gotcha of the PHP language, that snags me often, is that variables outside of functions are not truly global unless you tell the function they are...  This has led to frustration on more than one occasion for me...  The other gotcha is PHP is close to perl in many respects, but just enough difference to cause brain cramps...  I miss the idioms of perl, like creating @arrays on the fly without having to state 'list($blah, $blah2)'...  PHP3 is a very nice language with a bullseye target in mind...  PHP3 makes you think carefully about the structure of your code, and is not as forgiving as perl is to offuscation...

One last passing thought...  Perl allows you to run your scripts as your user/group id, whereas PHP3 does not (apache/apache)...

WOO HOO!!! I am soooo happy with this book   I'm going to read every page!

Seriously though, even just today I found myself having to refer to the php site again to check something simple - having a book handy is going to be awesome.

The CD comes with all kinds of examples, Apache 1.3.3, Xitami web server, and other stuff - it's awesome!  I love Amazon.com

Isn't PHP much easier on the server?  
Please tell me it really is the best.   
I only have time to learn one thing now, and I want to learn the best.  I was under the impression that cgi/perl was not the best option due to server strain and not optimal for web development...
