the entire east coast disappeared?
this one is stranger than strange to me, but pinging www.futurequest.net, www.whitehouse.gov and a few more east coast sites, came up completely empty for about 30 minutes. On my end, it looked like level3 took a hit around Dallas, TX, but maybe not. It even showed up in the server load. Strange. No browser access, nothing via FTP, and even email was not working. Maybe a backhoe at work somewhere

Re: the entire east coast disappeared?
Yeah, I typed in the wrong password trying to access one of my sites using SSH and broke the internet. Sorry about that
Thanks to the quick work by Melissa, the world was saved and has NYC back.
And here we thought it would happen with the west coast disappearing into the ocean one day when it only takes an absent-minded sometimes geek sitting in her office drinking a beer and tapping a keyboard.

ah ha! so you are the one that did it. -vbg- I hope things are well with you Betsy.
We have a sanitary sewer system coming to our neighborhood in the coming days. I suspect they might have found our cable system today. It took a couple of guys nearly two months to run cable out this way (6 miles). Now, the hardhat crew is closing the street to run sewer pipes. The best estimate is 6 weeks. To say the internet is going down the drain here, is a mild understatement. At least the library isn't that far away.

That reminds me, in my building they finally put locks on the cable boxes with all the wires in them. I'm still going to switch from Verizon to Optimum Online, and now I'll feel safer.

Does that mean you will actually pay for the cable also?
I lived in a place with an unlocked cable drop once and everybody used to just plug in and get cable. The cable company would come and unplug all of them every few months but never did put a lock on it...go figure.

Mont, I'm scratching my head over this. Did you have an unsanitary system previously?

I understand dial-up isn't that bad...

They give you a certain amount free, but I'll need more to run it the way I want. I don't think I have to run it from the locked box, which is in the compactor room on my floor. I just took a look and figured out how to access the wire in the sleeve outside my door. I'll probably have to drill a hole, feed through the black cable, and attach an extension at some point. I'll have to read Optimum Online's instructions.

Betsy was talking about the service, not the wiring.

Years ago, you could remove a short piece of cable to unlock the premium channel (I think we only had one at the time), and they frequently left the box open. Free movies!
Needless to say, they make it a lot harder now.

Re: the entire east coast disappeared?
Betsy, I live pretty far out of town, and we have always been on a septic system. The powers that be are closing our entire street down for 6 weeks to run sewer lines. The cable that Time Warner ran to get to my house and the other 5 houses on my street is right above the area where they are doing all the work. That still doesn't explain why my site traffic dropped off suddenly last night and then surged back up, but oh well. I see Terra had to do an upgrade, so that may have been part of or may not. Living in the country has it's advantages and disadvantages, though, lol. I really like Time Warners system status page, it's a completely blank, white page.

The part that added the context was in a separate paragraph and after her question. Besides, if she can't understand me, I'm not understanding her!
