Stock photos

Just wondering whether you have a favorite stock photo site when looking for images to use in web site design.

After coming up empty searching comstock and photos to go for an ongoing project, I thought I'd check with y'all.

Re: Stock photos

I always use stock.xchng.

I use it because 1) It's free and 2) I haven't bothered looking for other sites like that.

But the site is sometimes very slow.

Re: Stock photos

I also rely upon Istock. It does cost but the fees are quite low and they have a great selection. I have used the one Marv mentions but the slowness on the site drove me nuts.

Re: Stock photos

I checked out stock exchange and they don't have as good of a selection and they are very slow. Istock has some really professional quality pictures in there. They are also a little slow at times but nothing like stock exchange

Re: Stock photos

Guess everyone's familiar with Getty Images (www.gettyimages.com)

Prohibited use of iStockphoto.com stock photography:
Quote:
(g)use any image in the Content that depicts a person to endorse a business, product or service;
Hmmm. I would venture that the use of humans photographs on a business web site of any kind are designed to induce confidence. If I happen to have a picture of a person on the same page as a testimonial appears, am I thus using that person to endorse my business? This is tricky.

Quote:
(h) use any image in the Content that depicts a person in a potentially sensitive subject matter, including, but not limited to mental and physical health issues, social issues, contraband or crime;
I maintain at least one site related to physical health. The health issue primarily affects women and exercise is recommended as a way to help battle the problem. Having a picture of a woman exercising could be construed as a violation of this term. A "potentially sensitive subject matter" is too vague and prone to change. I imagine that ANY important subject matter is prone to some controversy at some point.

Quote:
(k) sub-license, re-sell, rent, lend, or otherwise distribute the Content;
Vague

Permitted uses:
Quote:
(a) install the Content in only one location; you may physically transfer the Content and its archives from one location to another, however it may only be used in one location at a time;
So, technically, if the Content is being used on my web site AND I'm editing a local copy to update my web site, then I'm violating copyright.

After looking through this License Agreement, I would be VERY hesitant to use this site. The saying is you get what you pay for... hopefully it won't be a lawsuit.
