Thanks Andi, this is cool. I ran it on my homepage and did not find any plagiarism per se, but did find a few links to my site that I hadn't known about. (They had used wording from our page to describe our organization, which is actually a good thing!)

Yes, this had occured to me when I ran a few of my more detailed pages and many of the sites that I quote were returned. I figured it would bring some random traffic to my site when people check to see if I'm plagiarizing and find a "fair use" quote and a link instead.

With as many links as are on my site it is typical for me to find a dozen referrals per day from search term "link:..."

But returning to the original use, it is good to find that no one has (yet) just copied portions of your site and used them. I've found one, but it is not well trafficked and they didn't steal big portions, just snippets--so it's hardly worth pursuing.

Can you claim this as an original line?

Yup. Everything on my site is original -- I even invented the colors.

That's all I'm finding. How can you tell if your stuff is worth anything if nobody is ripping you off?

this is a better example of true plagarism, but hardly worth fussing over in my opinion.

most of the time when i find something of mine reproduced i'm pleased, provided it is properly attributed, and most of the time it is.

This could be very useful because it highlights the copied text.

At the moment when I have text on a client site that might tempt a plagiarist I simply put a few choice quotes in GoogleAlert. This works very well and results in about 20/30 DMCA notices a month. The DMCAs require a copy of the infringing text and it's a bit of a pain to retrieve by hand and to be sure big blocks are identical. So this could be the answer.

I will try it out for a while thank you for suggesting it.

So even if they change a few words here and there, it still picks up on all the stuff they didn't?

yep. seems to be pretty good at finding text with high similiarity. it even brings back power point documents with matching text, in case you're so good that CEO's feel the need to quote you.

perhaps someone will figure out a way to run the newspaper stories of the world through it and find out which journalists are really cut and paste artists. we know there are a lot of them out there, but tracking them down has not been an easy thing to do to this point.
