I've thought this kind of move was inevitable for quite a few years. I can see the potential for confusion, but the fact is there is nothing technical that precludes this from happening. Logistically, as the number of TLDs grow, the demand on the root servers grows, which will require greater hardware provisioning. This is at least part of the large price tag for these.

The day a non-organization created a .org, TLDs became useless. I predicted they'd be eliminated but when I searched for that prediction I just found someone who suggested it. Just add a hyphen and whatever extension you want. TLDs are useful if their intended use is enforced, but it's better to have that information in some kind of meta data or domain registration information.
