Creating a Search Engine!?!

Thank you for the link to freefind.com, it is good to know that site is available. I don't really need a search engine [I didn't explain well, sorry], I am thinking about using PERL cgi scripts to do the following. Keep a 'database' of flat files. I was just trying to find out if someone new a better way to approach this so, if I actually use mySQL it would make the conversion a little easier. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

O.k. I am new to this so I am not sure what is kosher and what isn't.

I want to create a search engine, but I don't want to use a database just yet. I would like to see what the response to my site is going to be so for the time being I am going to use TAB-DELIMITED text files. What language(from your experience) would you recommend to use that will enable the easiest conversion to a database site?

TIA
