[FQuest Notice] MYSQL04/03 Software & Server Upgrade

When: Feb 16 & 17, 2006
Duration: Less than 10 minutes per domain
Software Upgrade: MySQL Upgrade From MySQL v.3.23.58 to v.4.0.25
Hardware Upgrade: Server Upgrade from MYSQL04 to MYSQL03

FutureQuest has upgraded both the MySQL version and the server hardware on the recently rebuilt MYSQL03 Server. All MySQL Databases currently residing on the MYSQL04 Server will now be moved to the newly upgraded MYSQL03 Server. This move will result in the MySQL Services, that are provided to databases currently residing on the MYSQL03 server, being upgraded from MySQL v.3.23.58 to MySQL v. 4.0.25

The move for each domain should not take more than 10 minutes to complete. However, it is important to note that while the databases are being moved, the MySQL services for that domain will not be available.

Tech Details:

The server your MySQL Databases are located on can be found by visiting the MySQL Manager within your CNC. The temporary hostname listed begins with the Server Name (MySQL01 or MySQL02 etc). An email notice is also being sent to all Technical and Alert/Primary contacts for each package that currently has databases on the MYSQL03 Server. If you have databases on MYSQL04 and do not receive the email by morning, you may wish to contact us to find out why.

The recommend hostname can be found in the CNC's MySQL Manager. It usually looks like: MySQL.example.com where example.com is replaced with your own domain name. If your scripts use the recommended hostname to connect to the MySQL Server, and FutureQuest manages the DNS for your domain, then the move should not have any adverse affects.

You should use the recommended hostname at all times wherever possible. However, if your scripts are not using the recommended hostname, e.g. they use the Server IP Address or the Server Name instead, then you should update them NOW to prevent failures after the move.

If there is a reason you are unable to use the recommended hostname, such as the DNS not yet being modified, you will need to make note of the following changes and implement them within your scripts after the move has been completed.

Current MYSQL04 Server Info:
Hostname: MySQL04.FutureQuest.net
IP......: 69.5.6.124

After the move it should be changed to:

NEW MYSQL03 Server Info:
Hostname: MySQL03.FutureQuest.net
IP......: IP: 69.5.6.123

If you manage your own DNS and you are using the recommended hostname to connect to MySQL you will need to update the DNS entry to reflect the IP address for MySQL01. You may also send an email to the service desk requesting a specific date and time frame to be assigned to your account's MySQL move to be completed.

Again, for most this move should not require any changes on your part. However, if you do not use the recommended hostname or you manage your own DNS, then you should pay special attention to the changes explained above and within the email that is being sent out concerning this upgrade.

Re: [FQuest Notice] MYSQL04/03 Software & Server Upgrade

Would it be possible to add linux server, MySQL server, and POP server names for accounts listed in QuestAdmin? If you want to go hog wild, adding disk space usage & quota, and bandwidth for the month would be a nice touch too.

Thx.

Re: [FQuest Notice] MYSQL04/03 Software & Server Upgrade

Bob,

I assume you will be disabling access to the sites that are affected right? 10 minutes of MySQL downtime for a data driven site will obviously cause serious issues, so during the MySQL downtime what will you be doing to block access to the domain?

Thanks

Pete

Don't worry about it I've modified my error class to be more suited to a longer downtime.

Pete - I think that's left up to each site owner as FQ has no way of knowing which sites or parts thereof make use of the server.

Re: [FQuest Notice] MYSQL04/03 Software & Server Upgrade

Normallly we shutdown only the mysql access during the move. That way if the web site can still function it does. The 10 minutes is really just an estimate as it actually takes however long it takes to rsync the data from one box to the other plus about a minute of overhead.

If you need special considerations or timing you can email the service desk with the specifics and we will see what we can do.

This move has been completed. All accounts on the MYSQL04 server have been moved over to the MYSQL03 server.
