View Full Version : Accessing E-Mail via telneting in: How?

I have done this before on other systems but it doesn't work (probably operator error) on FQ.

I telnet in to my shell account and try to read my email using Pine. But there is never anything in my inbox, even though I know there is some mail waiting for me.

I have gone into Setup to make sure everything is correct and everything looks ok.

Any clues why no mail shows up?

I'm just trying to read my primary email account with Pine but this brings up another point also. If I have multiple pop accounts, how do I also read those with Pine?

Thanks,

Mike

Pine doesn't work here, at FutureQuest. My husband hosts elsewhere, and does what you describe (telnetting in and reading mail at a command prompt). Because of the way the mail is set up at FutureQuest, you can't do that. Instead, you might try some web interface for reading mail.

You might try Panda Mail (http://www.pandamail.net/).

If you would like to install your own script, some of us have installed the Mailreader.com script on our own web space, which is kind of nifty. In a recent thread here, someone shared a PHP interface they had written, to which the source is available. I suspect, that if we just wait a few more weeks, we may have a webmail interface provided by FutureQuest?

You could use a true POP command-line client, though I don't know of any off-hand. PINE unfortunately doesn't support POP, and only works with standard Sendmail's mbox format, which is extremely outdated...

But, if you could find a console-based POP client, you should have no problems. A google search might be in order...
