I'm trying to find a suitable photo gallery php package. I thought I found one when I stumbled onto gallery.sourceforge.net. It's elegant, seemed to work fine on a local machine but when I tried to put it onto futurequest it bombed from what Terra and I suspected to be problems with the way futurequest's accounts are locked down.
I was wondering first if anyone had gotten this package to work on futurequest or if anyone has any other suggestions for php photo gallery software that isn't buggy, and isn't ugly.
I'm interested in fielding all suggestions and no I would like to avoid using yahoo's photo gallery solution and would like to keep my photos on my site.
All suggestions welcome!
TIA
- Ed
The gallery code I use is a perl hodge podge called (rather unimaginatively) gallery that I wrote on top of a Perl template expansion module (also my own). It operates from a properties file which defines which pictures to use and what captions to place under each one (amongst other things) and generates HTML and thumbnail images which you can then upload onto your server. It will be free code once I get around to publishing it, but you're welcome to have a look if you want.
gallery requires ImageMagick, though, and is untested on anything except Linux.
Example gallery here - http://www.dunx.org/mc/pilgrims/16/MCpilg16.html
The format of the pages is determined by the template file input to gallery, so is utterly malleable.
You might like to look at Photo Gallery at www.aquonics.com. It is a PHP script which hasn't been completed yet, but is due to go 'gold' very soon according to the author.

Use Arles from www.DigitalDutch.com (owned by Jan Derk).

Yes, use Arles Image Web Page Creator (http://www.digitaldutch.com/arles/) to create image galleries. ;)
But seriously, I could tell you about all the advanced features Arles contains, but I would just say download Arles (http://www.digitaldutch.com/arles/download.htm) and try it yourself. You might want to take a look at some screenshots (http://www.digitaldutch.com/arles/screenshots/index.htm) and example galleries (http://www.digitaldutch.com/arles/examples/) before you try.

One warning about dynamic gallery scripts. Make sure you do *not* use one that creates thumbnails on the fly for each page shown. Image processing is processor intensive. Therefore, such scripts will make your pages slow to load and will overload the server if your web site is even mildly popular.

I've been experimenting with ways to do image galleries for years. I do quite a few each school year.
I finally tried Arles Image Web Page Creator this year. Fantastic. Indespensible. It's become one of my "can't live without it" pieces of software.
Jan,
So tell us ... how much?

Personally, I was looking at something that could do something exactly like gallery at http://gallery.sourceforge.net. Photoshop can generate static pages for me but the features that come along with gallery seemed nice and on top of that it was free.
Something that can generate thumbnails and galleries based on files you upload is nice. I'm going to try a couple of suggestions.
Jan, I'm sure your program is great however since I have photoshop it's a little redundant even though your program is a tad more flexible.
In the end when I have time I may just default to trying to fix gallery to work with my needs. That's the beauty of opensource.
