View Full Version : Strange Eudora problem

I'm using Eudora - for Mac if that matters. I haven't had this program long and I just discovered something really strange. When I get a response to a form on one of my sites, it comes addressed to "Some Bozo." The form actually does not have a contact name - it's just blank. So Eudora is, by default, inserting "Some Bozo" in the subject line. It's not the form or the cgi script.

I have written to their tech support about it but haven't gotten a response yet - after a few days. Maybe I've stumped them.

I can't find any setting or preference in the program that addresses this.

Anyone have a clue?

Thanks

I tried sending a completely blank email, no subject, no To, no From and in it's just blank in Eudora (Windows), it says No Sender and No Subject, nothing is inserted.

My guess is that it's either a Mac thing, or the script that handles the form is inserting "Some Bozo" as a default.

I can't find it anywhere in the script - wouldn't "Some Bozo" have to be in the script somewhere?

What bugs me is that I can't find anywhere to change it in Eudora. Annoying.

Thanks for checking though. Maybe it's the Mac version trying to be cutsie.

Test whether it is Eudora or the script by doing something like this:

Either check your mail in a different utility, or, if that isn't possible,

Have the script forward the mail to a different mailbox, like a throw-away email account at hotmail or something like that. See if you still get the "some bozo" addressee.

I'd recommend viewing the full headers on the message and seeing if that string is in there.

There will *always* be a From: header, regardless. Without a From: header, the mail system has no idea where to send the message... so it's there, whether Eudora is showing it to you or not...

This is how it shows up in the header - as ()

It's just in my e-mailbox that it says "Some Bozo"

Really weird.

It's definitely a Eudora-only problem. It's a nice program but it's so "easy to use" there aren't many settings to tweak. And this seems to be untweakable.

Thanks

I must learn to think before posting... What I meant to say was that there has to be a TO: header, but that's obviously irrelevant here... so kindly disregard my earlier post :)

I'm guessing it's Eudora doing this. A quick Google search for eudora "some bozo" mac turns up some references to a bug in the "new comp window", and I'm guessing it has something to do with this. Probably an easter egg planted by some bozo programmer? :P

I found the reference you mentioned, Justin - I should've thought of searching on google or eudora. Oh well. They say that bug was fixed in an earlier version than the program I have. I guess some bozo over there really likes it. At least I have an answer I suppose I can put up with some bozo in my mailbox. Thanks again.

Pre-Qualcomm Eudora was a great tool, but had a reputation for being snotty. My favorite thing it used to do on a Mac was this:

If you were typing away with Eudora in the foreground but with no Eudora input window open (easy to do on a Mac if you're not paying attention), Eudora would beep at you and throw this error at you: "You can stop typing. No one is listening."
