I am having trouble enabling streaming and playing back of a Real Video Smil/Real Pix file.

True rtsp streaming is being used and the actual smil file uses a combination of ram, rm, rt, and rp file extentions. The trouble is that I'm getting an error message after clicking on the pointer "ram" file that the "rp" (realpix) file cannot be found. The rp file is in the Real_Audio folder like it is supposed to be (along with the other 3 file types and images that work in combination together).

I then thought that the server could not recognize the "rp" extension, so I created an .htaccess file and placed it first in my www directory, and then my Real_Audio directory as well.

The files are all recognzed using an http protocol, but not true streaming of rtsp protocol. Does anyone have any ideas? Here is the link to the Real Slideshow as it is now.

Thanks

Hello Todd,

This FAQ from the Service Desk Area may help:

Browsers are meant to understand certain protocols, such as http:// and ftp://. Some browsers (such as Internet Explorer) also recognize the pnm:// and rtsp:// protocols, but others (Netscape) do not.

So how do I link to my Real Audio files?

What you need to do is create what is called a "stub file", which is nothing more than a text file containing a URL (the pnm:// or rtsp:// URL above). Name the stub file something.ram, and link to it directly from your normal document root (http://yourdomain.com/filename.ram). This will launch the Real Player, which will in turn open the URL found in the stub file.

Please visit http://www.Real.com/ for more help with this. There is a lot of documentation on this subject within their Developers sections.

I hope this helps and Good Luck:QD:

Thanks for the fast reply Bob, but the ram file is already created. That is what the link is I posted to. The trouble is that the server is saying that the file cannot be found, but it certainly is there. The server is finding the ram, smil, rm, rt,....but not the rp file. They are all sitting right next to each other in the same directory. That is why I thought that the server could not recognize the rp file extension.

Any other ideas?

Hi again Todd,

I see that linking to your .rm file the music plays fine, however no images are displayed.

You may wish to go back and look at your entire slide show, as I have two slide shows running on FutureQuest servers that work fine, including the .rp file. However I call mine via:
http://jaxfountain.com/southbank.ram .(Didn't know about the RealMedia Server when I set it up)

Edit: Ok it should work now %)

Calling your .rt file does show the opening slide by itself and nothing additional. Something just seems wrong with the overall slide show to me :(

Hope this may help further,
Bob

Hi Bob,

It looks like you are running your slideshow from an http protocol, and not a true streaming protocol (rtsp).

This is baffling me. Everything else is running true streaming, (the rm, smil, and rt). but not the rp (realpix) file. You can tell by going under statistics in Real Player and it will tell you the protocol of UDP or HTTP. UDP is changing as the user's connection speed changes and HTTP will give you a straight bit rate.

My conventional movies (rm) play fine, but this is the first time I've tried the slideshow thing, and for some reason it's not working as it should.

I've tried re-making and uploading the files....that still didn't work. I'm stuck!

Hi again Todd,

Well after a few stumbles LOL and the kindness of Terra to do a quick installation of the Real_Audio Server on my account and uploading a bunch of files ;)

I got it to work.

I created a stub file:
http://www.wolfstalks.com/southbanktest.ram

The contents of which is this:

rtsp://wolfstalks.com/Real_Audio/southbank.smil

And it worked :QD:

So with a little thought very little if you really know me as that is all I am capable of I made another stub file:
http://wolfstalks.net/todd.ram

Check it out and Thanks for letting me see it :QTUSA:

Hope this helps,
Bob

Hi Bob,

Thanks for looking at that for me. Just a couple of hours ago I finally just reinstalled and uploaded directly from the Real Slidshow producer and that finally did the trick. I might have had a corrupt file in there or something.

Anyway, thanks for keeping up with this. This was just a little presentation I put together when I was in DC last week the day of the attack. It was pretty crazy. The best part of it all was the candlelight vigil they had the night after on capitol hill...that was very cool.

Thanks again,

Todd
