View Full Version : Read-only 'anonymous' FTP account
Hello,
I'm looking for a host for my company AGD. We're a game developer and wish to publish a demo/preview of our games somewhere in the future. We would need anonymous ftp for that; I've read that this is possible with an extra ftp account (ie. guest/guest). But we need a read-only account with access to only one directory.
Many people use this method to allow their (forum) users to upload files, but we don't want that. Is it possible to manually set the permissions for such a ftp account?
Best regards,
Anne

You would need to use the 'guest/guest' methodology as we do not offer Anonymous FTP for security reasons...
The VAS FTP accounts are a way to give helpers file upload/download access and were never meant for 'untrusted' people to use...
There is no way that we can offer what you are seeking from the FTP servers...

And there is no way you could make me a ftp account with only read priviliges?
Why would you need an ftp account for that? You could easily place a simple download link on a web page somewhere, or you could get fancier with a download manager (of which I have one available (http://accountbiller.com/demo/d-man/)) that could regulate access and/or track downloads. What specifically would ftp downloading offer that could not be done in another fashion?

Hmmm. You're right indeed, I started to think in that way from the start and haven't taken a step back. Anonymous ftp isn't necessary.
Thanks for pointing that out :)

From what I understood, I thought that ftp downloads do not count toward the bandwidth of a package....
Please correct me if I am wrong.

From what I understood, I thought that ftp downloads do not count toward the bandwidth of a package.... All bandwidth generated from your account usage should count against what is made available for that account.
With that said..... FutureQuest has not yet begun counting bandwidth for things such as email and FTP so currently your statement is correct but as the tracking software is upgraded these things will change for obvious reasons...

Yet another reason for me to get that new hardrive and add the necessary components to be able to test locally!! No more FTP, test, FTP overwrite, test, ad nauseum . . .
