View Full Version : Thinking of going dual-boot OS (win98 + Linux)

There's tons of documentation here and elsewhere on How To, so I won't ask those questions again :p LOL . . . my question is a little more basic as I contemplate doing this: what is the footprint for the usual collection of OS + Apps? I want to make sure I am not going to crowd myself too much before I knock myself out with installation. (Or alternately . . . I need to get myself a new HD!)

I just want to be able to replicate basic FQ behavior locally, I am not looking to completely mirror all the amazing 8} FQ tweaks . . . ie, I want to be able to test out Perl scripts locally, it'd be nice if my .shtml pages would slap themselves together . . . php/mySQL would really rock too, but that would be icing at this point.

So that's it . . . what size footprint am I looking at?

For a Linux installation with all the trimmings you need more than 1.5 GB, but I'd say you need at least 500 MB for a decent basic installation (which doesn't include X-Windows). With X-Windows you'd need roughly 1 GB.

I just upgraded to RH 7.1. A full install of everything runs 2.5GB.
I use it for all my local work and it has no probs with SSI and Perl. The only thing I have to change before uploading to FQ, is the domain names in some of the CGI scripts.

http://mydomain.local does not move over well. :)
