I see that Internet Explorer 6 (http://microsoft.com/ie) is now released (non-beta.)

I'm downloading it now and will try installing it first on a secondary computer just in case there are problems.

What does everyone think of it? Better than IE 5.5?

Sigh. I've yet to download IE 6 and try it out; but it's things like the Microsoft/AOL war that make me want to give up my computer and live under a rock someplace. You notice that IE has dropped support for Netscape-style plugins, right? If you like, you can develop Active X components instead that do the same thing.

Microsoft forces you to use their tools. AOL forces you to stare at AOL 6.0 Free! ads. Adobe calls the cops if you break ROT13. As a little bitty developer/designer I'm feeling mighty squished. Oh well. I guess I'll become a habitual Mozilla user for a while.

I downloaded IE 6 but I have deferred installing it until I hear from you folks. The download was is only 496K, whereas IE 5.5 is megabytes. Has MS finally started to write compact code, or did I download the wrong thing?

Dumbfounded,

No,

that is the right download, but the 496K is just for the initial setup program which then connects to the net and downloads the rest of the files.

I went ahead and downloaded all the files for 98/NT/2000 so I could install it on a couple other computers with slow net connections, and that came to a grand total of 54 MB.

The install went very smoothly, and I feel this is a pretty good release - no problems to report so far. And it does feel a little faster than IE 5.x.

Thanks a heap for the info, Jeff.

Am I correct in assuming IE6 works okay with Win95? (I still prefer Win95. I also do much of my typing on a Selectric... but last week I finally decided to install indoor plumbing.)

Oxymoron="Microsoft Works"

Aloha,

It's kool. I ahve 6.0 and it's buggy a little bit. It crashed every now and then, and then it brings up the error reporting box, and send a report in.

I like it, so all is well over here.:D
