I'm looking forward to the new series too (especially since I'll actually get to see as it's first broadcast for a change rather than having the trans-Atlantic time lag to deal with), but DS9 and Voyager weren't that bad. Why is everyone so down on them all the time?

The reason I'm into TNG is that it usually deals with scientific/unknown issues and it's fun to watch the crew work as a team . They introduce tricky situations and interestingly, come up with creative solutions. DS9 is a soap opera in space and Voyager seems to be a TNG wannabe. In addition, DS9 and Voyager are some how not true to the Star Trek theme in the sense that they are not fun to watch and follow. They don't grab me as TNG did.

This is just my opinion on the various Star Trek shows.

As the years went by, the various ST's got tamer and more PC, always out to teach some lesson at the expense of providing good entertainment. I say bring back phasers, alien lovers and torn captain's shirts!

Well, I'm not going to get into a detailed defense of DS9, because I didn't like it much either (I mean, I watched it, but I didn't keep it). I'm personally quite fond of Voyager though - it didn't have the energy of TOS or even TNG, but it did have some very interesting premises in some of the stories, and much of the story telling was well done.

Thing is, if you look back at TNG, it had some really, really bad episodes, particularly in the first couple of series. Some Voyager is as good as the best TNG I reckon (not much, true, but some) and I really don't think any Voyager is as bad as the worst Next Gen.

Some of the continuity sucks, though.

This is primarily a religous debate though, so I'm going to shut up now.

The very first episode of ST:TNG (Encounter at Farpoint) was so spectacularly stupid and lame that I thought they'd close the series down before 6 episodes had run.

If they had, we'd never have seen "Best of Both Worlds" or my (arguably) favorite episode, "Tapestry". But boy, were there some hideous TNG episodes, and not just the first couple year, bleak as those were.

ST: Voyager had one fundamental problem I couldn't get over, and thus, never watched the show after the first two episodes. Mulgrew has the look and mannerisms of a sociopath. Like she's heard about emotions, and has watched people have them, but has never really had them herself. Stapling her eyebrows to her forehead would have improved the first couple of episodes enourmously. I don't know if she ever learned to control those or if she went the whole series trying to do a Groucho Marx impersonation. This may be a roundabout way of saying I don't believe she can act. :)

Gods, yes - and to think that was the first Trek film I actually went to the cinema to see...

Indeed, ST5 was so bad that Gene Roddenberry actually disowned it! And that bit at the beginning with Kirk supposedly free climbing is just so embarrassing.
