View Full Version : UBB problem

My UBB at www.rib.net/forum has started to sulk and won't display any messages.

The opening page lists the forums and messages, but if you go into any of the forums it doesn't diaplay any messages. Looking at the HTML, it looks like the script is writing incomplete pages (there's no closing page tags for instance).

The messages are all still intact, but the only way I can view them is using "Edit/Prune Messages" in the control panel. I have updated the threads and reindexed.

Any help would be gratefully received!

Thanks
John

Are the pages themselves incomplete, or just not loading completely (you can check in telnet). Assuming you are using a pre-v6 UBB the threads data is stored in .cgi files and parsed into static HTML files which are used for reading and are updated whenever a new post is made.

The message pages themselves are fine eg http://www.rib.net/ubb/Forum4/HTML/000026.html

It's the forum display that's not working eg http://www.rib.net/cgi-bin/ubb/forumdisplay.cgi?action=topics&number=4&SUBMIT=Go

Looks like the forum indexes are lost/corrupted.

You can fix these by going into the control panel, selecting general settings, then submitting - making sure that the checkbox to rebuild the forum is ticked at the bottom, then doing an update and reindex.

(can't be more specific - the UBB where I just started to help administrate has deleted all member accounts so I can't get into the control panel. This sort of thing is happening a lot there, members being lost and forum indexes being deleted, possibly due to lack of space problems)

I've gone thorugh all the reindexing, thread counting, updating routines and it makes no difference . . .

but an important step in rebuilding it not very obvious - which is resubmitting your general settings with the

"Check here to rebuild the forum thread files, recount topics and replies and reset the last post times. This is not necessary unless you think your forums do not show correct lists of topics or have incorrect counts."

box checked.

The HTML files are intact, as are the .cgi files (the message preview displayed when replying is generated from the .cgi files, not from the statis HTML files) which just leaves a problem with the indexes, and that is the best solution I can offer, assuming you have enough free space.

Try looking here (http://infopopfaq.infopop.net/OpenTopic/page?q=Y&a=tpc&s=10009141&f=830092371&m=865090581)

Actually, the index files look okay ( e.g. http://www.rib.net/ubb/Forum2/forum2.threads )

Have you tried asking for help at the scriptkeeper forums?

I've got stacks of free space (of course, this is FutureQuest!) but I ran through the procedure anyway. Not that it made any difference.

I'll try over at scriptkeeper and see if anyone there can come up with anything. Then I'll buy a copy of VBulletin!

Apologies, that's about the best I can do at the moment - I can't afford UBB and bing made administrator on a forum recently is my first real experience of this side of the software (not counting the free(read cripple)ware version I used to run)

All I need now is for the Infopop moderator to approve me so I can post to their forum . . .

Not only do you have to register, but you have to wait to be approved! Anyway, I've got the go ahead now so I'll see if they can help.

Had a stupid argument with a mod there once and now the only forum I visit is the UGB forum.
