View Full Version : cutoffmyfeet.com - publicity stunt - discretion advised

Just thinking about the concept is making me have to fight throwing up. If the news link is just too much, delete the thread (I can see how this pushes the envelope in every way).
Yehck!!!!!!!!! This is the publicity stunt of history til now. Birth on webcam or Carnie Wilson's stomach surgery on webcam can't come close to the publicity this is going to receive (unless the media decides this is too crazy to print or put on TV).

Yee gads! You'd think there'd be a law against self-dismemberment? Maybe they'll take the guy to the local nuthouse. I appreciate his situation and frustration, but this is going a bit too far!
Also, his website crashed my NS 6.1 browser. Probably bad javascript or something?

Assuming this person is sane, goes ahead with the amputation, and succeeds in raising the money, he will either end up regretting it or wanting to find new limbs to amputate. Or maybe he'll perform surgery to extract redundant organs like the second kidney/lung.
In my view, this person is sick and needs a proper punishment just for thinking about this.
Tatu: I agree with you in that this link might be just too much, but I also think it's good to be informed on what new and sadistic ideas people use to make money. I know lots of people who are willing to go to the same level of insanity (just in different ways) to make money. If I wasn't aware of their thoughts and intentions, I would still be around them.
Thanx for the post. :)
... hopes to have a team of paramedics on hand Ummm in the US that team would only be there to prevent him from causing harm to himself or others. There is no way they could legally stand by for such an ordeal..... unless I'm just THAT FAR out of the loop??
I don't know what upsets me more...his ability to consider such a thing or the fact that he and so many others are confident that such a thing would in fact bring in the cash needed.
Another part of me wonders if he isn't using this stunt as a way to pull on someone's heart to just send him the funds in return for him having it done by professionals...in which case I think it's in extremely poor taste and undeserved.
FutureQuest could use some funds right about now too but I don't think I'd be able to get Bob to agree to going that far.. could I Bob? [end bad joke]

- I think I'll add this restriction to our terms of service.

Deb, I agree.
Has any one done the math? He hopes to have 200,000 $20 subscribers. That's $4 million. Minus $200,000 "foot replacements" = $3.8 million.
This guy and his friends are absolutely insane. I can't believe he'd cut his own feet off with a home-made guillotine because his health insurance wouldn't cover their amputation.
Has any one noticed his numerous comments of him "hoping there will be paramedics there" and "hoping a doctor will be there to" inject pain medication and "hoping a doctor" will be there to stop excessive blood-loss??? A lot of simple "hoping" going on.
Also, has any one thought of what will happen when he's rushed to the emergency room? Wouldn't they just attempt to reattach the feet, which he claims he'll be freezing??
I'll bet a 100 bucks that every one of his subscribers is noted by the FBI.
I can't believe that I'm actually typing about such an insane whacko situation. :disagree:

Well, ya, I think there ought to be some penalty for crashing my browser, as well!
:P
The worst part is, if they took him to a nuthouse now, some group such as ACLU would step in to protect his rights. Then he'd take a psychiatric evaluation and pass it some how... resulting in a mega-bucks lawsuit against those who just want to protect him from himself.

:P I think there ought to be some penalty for using NS6 in the first place....

OMG - I can't believe someone is actually going to do this! He's also going to be allowing someone to watch in person. Yeah, I'm a runnin'... Sheesh~
I knew prothetics cost an arm and a leg, but geeez...
I guess we'll need to keep an eye on Ebay for some bronzed remnants going up for auction.

I'm going back to IE. *shudders* I never thought I'd say that in this lifetime. NS doesn't do it for me anymore. :(
Did I mention NS6.1 gave me Net2Phone (even though I unchecked the box for it) and AOL "Unlimited Internet" (without asking for it)??
Somebody pointed me to this site a few days ago. Reading this thread got me curious and I now see that it's Access Denied. Retrieval of that file is forbidden. .
So maybe his hosting company took him down...
That or maybe he just exceeded his bandwidth from all the gawkers :(
His counter was at 295,000...

Well, I'm glad they took the site down. This guy needs to think of a different solution to his problem.

Ugh. Good thing MS software never installed anything I didn't want! I can always rely on them! :P

Again, folks, forget the Altered By Netscape Marketing Co. version of the critter, and go get Mozilla: http://www.mozilla.org
Besides, Mozilla 0.9.2.1 was used to make NS 6.1, and they're at 0.9.3 now. Please use a Talkback enabled build, which will send back status/debugging info if, or when, Mozilla crashes.

I was using Mozilla 0.9.1 about 50% (other 50% IE) until just a week or two ago. The main problem, was I couldn't get the Java plug-in to work, and Mozilla.org don't offer support. I thought if I tried NS 6.1, the Java plug in would be packaged with the browser and more likely to work and I might be able to get support.
The Java plug-in did install, and works on *some* sites. I sent an e-mail to NS support, before I found that the Java plugin actually worked sometimes (I wrote to them that it didn't work). I got an e-mail back from them a few days later, saying this was a "known bug". End of story.

Isn't it amazing how almost any topic can turn into an IE vs. NS thread? :P
Well, unable to leave well enough alone, I want to point out a comment at Slashdot, mostly because it supports my point of view. :P
