View Full Version : Windows XP - firewall

The word I get is that WinXP will reject drivers it considers are -- uhh -- inappropriate. Among these are Zone Alarm and Blackice. Rumored reason is that XP comes equipped with its own Firewall. If true, we now know what MS has as the next target for oblivion -- competitive firewalls.
Any truth to all this?

There will be 3 Internets, as the world will know it:
1) Plain old Internet
2) AOL, Inc.
3) Microsoft .NET
#1 and #2 don't stand a chance... `|
They (Microsoft) will guarantee this by ensuring that the Microsoft firewall will only work with #3, while dropping every 1 of 1000 packets (with obligatory delay) on either #2 and #3... ~#
FutureQuest.net is **slow**, but http://we.own.you.at.microsoft.com will be faster than greased lightning - so they **must** be better!
Looking deeper into my fantasy crystal ball, I see Cisco being consumed and the router IOS altered to give all Microsoft traffic a QOS priority of +10, while all the rest is -10... In court, they will say that it was only a 'default' setting and can be changed by any 20+ years experienced router veteran chanting in 1000 year old forgotten dialects... :P
Divide and Conquer is the Microsoft way, simple yet very very effective... If that doesn't work, then just throw lots and lots and lots and lots of money at it... :$

Seems like there would be some liability there...
If Microsoft will not allow you to run other firewall software, and your box gets exploited, wouldn't Microsoft be somewhat liable? After all, they took the ability and thus responsibility to secure your box out of your hands and into their own...
--risky business
Wouldn't Life be Grand, if Microsoft was held liable for Anything :P
Just my two cents ;)

This was announced on slashdot, to similar response. No one would accuse me of being a Microsoft fan, but this is all nonsense: current versions of zonelabs and blackice are effectively hacks: a version of Zonelabs that works with XP is allegedly already done, and black ice should be ready for XP "within a week" (it's software, so I'll assume that means "in a few weeks...") This is "drivers that have caused trouble in the past won't be able to do the same workarounds, they'll have to go through an API darn it" change, the same as we see all the time in OS upgrades.

Hmmm... maybe it IS an unfounded rumor. I picked it up from a forum populated by Linux geeks & security guys. Maybe they're wrong, but they sure sounded like they know what they're speaking of.
