My laptop's hard drive started making rattling noises this morning. Then it rebooted itself. Hard drive's death declared at 8:26AM, June 22, 2001.

:@ It's annoying that the thing is so old that replacing the hard drive would cost more than this laptop's worth. :sniffle: It's even more annoying that work is going to take twice as long ( :waa: ) and include (*gasp* :wowwee: ) actually writing notes with a pen... by hand.

Just venting... http://www.contrabandent.com/pez/otn/angry/11zmad2.gif

Tatu, you have my sympathy both for the loss of your hard drive and for your having to use pen and paper. A very dark day, indeed. And I think you should have used even more smilies on an occasion such as this.:sniffle:

You know, Tatu, until this thread I didn't know that the back of a smiley's face was a butt. I'm not sure that I wanted to know that. Too much information?

This is disturbing. Now every time I see a smiley I'm going to be thinking about what's on the back side of it! Maybe we should ban all smiley's from the board?

Heheh before I hastily clicked Submit Poll, one of the poll options was supposed to be:
4. "...that he's a superb finder of smilies such as http://ukobservers.net/cwm/otn/angry/tdo3.gif."

I felt calling up Deb to add the fourth option would have been crossing some sort of line...

I'll manage.

If it helps, try thinking of it as a ponytail.

Don't toss that laptop yet.

Few if any laptop parts are standared. But 2 things often are. The CPU and the hard drive. I have personaly opened up several dead laptops and salvaged good CPUs. The last one was a nice P200 MMX. Some laptops put the CPU in easy reach under a cover. Others you need to dig. Look for the warped plastic from the heat.:*

But as for a HDD that has failed, your in luck. Most can be replaced by the end user. Any off the shelf 2.5 inch 1/6H Notebook hard drive should work.

That P200 system had its jem hidden in an easy to remove caddy on the bottom. Getting the drive out of the caddy was harder. But now I have a nice 2.1gb drive.

My OMNIBook 800CT, the thing I am typing this on now, hard drive failed last year. Clunk and 1.2gb down the drain. So I replaced it. With a 18GB drive!!! It was hiding under the keyboard on this puppy. Talk about storage space. 8}

Now I am running Mandrake 8 and loving it.

Strange fact. The new drive gave me 45 minutes more battery life!!!

Look around and see what you can find in new or used 2.5 inch drives. That is, if you happen to like your old laptop. The new ones are ultra trick (with USB and all:) ) but a lot of $$$.

Dunx: =)

Great news! I developed a way of using NotePad today. I laugh at the package of Uniball 8's I had to buy.

YFS: Thanks for the tips. At least I know it's still salvagable... I don't mind my old laptop, but I suppose buying a hard drive for it would cost more than the laptop itself. Still cheaper than buying a new one, but I'll wait until I have a more dire need to use the money.

Meaning using pen and paper wasn't a dire need?!?!?

Since 2.5" 4-5 gig drives are around $50-70 bucks, that's one darn cheap laptop you're talking about. :)

Take a look over at http://www.pricewatch.com or ebay.

This puppy was bought in late 1995. I haven't looked at prices for replacing the drive yet.

Apparently, I can manage along just fine... I'll have to wait until I have a more dire need to use the money.

No... I did not spend too much money on domain names.
