View Full Version : Win NT dynamic TCP/IP setup help

Need to ask a question for my husband, hope that's ok to do here. We're moving to Tulsa in 5 days, and he'll be telecommuting for his current position for a while. He's a hardware engineer with a telecomm company. Here's the question, he's dictating :)

MY QUESTION:
"I need a way of being able to change dynamically the TCP/IP setup used in NT so that I can use the IP address assigned at modem connect to get into my Oracle database application. My IS person at work told me that you cannot dynamically change the TCP/IP setup because once it's changed you have to reboot the machine, then another new one is assigned when you log in remotely."

THIS IS THE SITUATION:
"I currently use an Oracle database application which needs to have a fixed IP address that maps to a specified DNS search order and domain search order. The application needs to go through a firewall from one company to another company that I have existing permission to access from my fixed site, through the WINS address (primary/secondary, enable DNS for...., enable LM Hosts Lookup, Routing do not enable IP forwarding). This is the existing setup on my laptop which I'll be using to telecommute. I presently use it through the LAN, and will be using to telecommute once we move. Thank you in advance for any help you can offer. My wife thought someone here might know how to resolve this dilemma. Sincerely, George"

Once again, hope it's ok to post this here.

Thanks,

Nix

Though I can't go into deep details on it, I would recommend investigating setting up a VPN that interconnects private (non-routable) addresses...

192.168.?.? --> Assigned IP --| ------------- |-- Gateway --> 192.168.?.?

This way, the Assigned IP won't matter much as the OS should transparently grab the new Dynamic IP address and tunnel through encapsulation to the Gateway which strips the VPN envelope and internally route to the backside Oracle engines...

In my experience - encrypted tunnels are great for this type of work and somewhat secure if done correctly...

Just my 2 cents...

Something tells me it'll be worth way more than two cents :) I've copied your answer and dropped it into an email to George at his job. I'll be sure to let you know how it all turns out. This is the last glitch that we need to work out before the move, but it's obviously an important one.

Thanks again, take good care,

Nix

Hi Terra...

Just wanted to let you know that we've arrived in Tulsa, and George is happily working away at home. Thanks to you and two other friends, he was able to get connected to what he needed. Just wanted to say a huge thanks!
