to anyone who's used either message boards:

w/o mssql, how did you find the UBB? was it 'enough' (both for your visitors and your own admin features)?

i guess one of my primary concerns in having one for my site is to have different forums, as i anticipate a rather large amount of visitors wanting to discuss several different things, but far too specific to keep in just one 'general' forum. (eg: a forum for masseuses, reiki, bodywork, etc. have one forum for each)

thanks for any feedback/opinions for either.

It's all a matter of preference. For the smaller sites overall the UBB is great...especially if you are not yet ready to take the plunge with mySQL. For the larger sites, and/or those with mySQL then I would have to recommend the vBulletin. (Disclaimer: For the _really_ large sites of course it's time to look at outsourcing the forums and/or dedicated servers)

Overall though it's just a matter of which one you and your visitors will enjoy more...

funny.......ubb's package where *they* host it is more expensive than even vbulletin's full package. yet hosting your own (on site owner's choice) is (obviously) where you have *all* admin abilities!

any guesses on this??

ps: Deb, do you sleep ever, as i've posted both day and night and boy, you're still here answering away! :D THANK YOU!

UBB did just fine for me for about 2 years (admin and user wise), but I've recently outgrown it and will be switching to vBulliten. If it keeps growing like it has I'm going to have to start charging admission :D

The one good thing about the UBB is you can be on the least expensive package here and use it. If you expect your traffic will be like mine (go take a look) any time soon then go with vBulliten. It's just my opinion though.

As I noted in another thread, I converted two UBB sites to vBulletin a few days ago. Even though vB has some definite advantages, overall I still prefer UBB (my users, though, appear to like all the whiz-bang gee-gaws in vB). I switched because of the price.

Now I find out that UBB is having a "June Sale (http://ubbforums.infopop.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=3&t=000551)." Sheesh! I should have waited a few days.

:D thanks for that feedback!

i went back to check out that packages, and noticed that the "OpenTopic" package is more what i'm looking for (creating different forums for different interest groups), yet the "UBB" seemed to have more the power/features much lke vBulletin (which i love).

teach1st, did you consider the "OpenTopic" or just go to the UBB one for your needs?

Kara, i too checked out the vBulletin's features and agree w/you--it's definitely robust enough for growing/huge sites. but i think i want to first see how the whole message board thing goes for me for my site w/maybe a cheaper service for now.:)

I used UBB before Open Topic came out. I did look at OT last week, before I decided on vB, but OT didn't fit my needs at all.
