i am about to start building a site for a US based charitable foundation.

they want to be able to take in donations via the internet/credit card. they do not as yet have a merchant account.

does anyone have a short term solution, they are recieving 100's of enquiries/day but there is a high attrition rate because folks want to give there and then.

I have assumed that the firm has already applied for a merchant account and that their application is currently being processed. They should call the firm that is processing their application and explain their situation and request that their application be expedited. They might also ask if they can be given a "provisional" account. This would provide them with the merchant account numbers and would allow them to accept charges, but they would receive no funds until the application process has been completed.
